Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge
Not many places in this country can boast about its 19,000 acre National Wildlife Refuge with abundant buffalo, and elk. Valentine can! Located 4 miles east of Valentine off Highway 12, the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1912 to make a home for six buffalo, seventeen elk, and several deer that were donated to the federal government. Since then, the refuge has been a sanctuary for several wildlife species that once roamed the plains, as well as prairie dogs, white-tailed deer, prong-horn, Canada geese, waterfowl, and many other birds (over 200 species have been spotted here!).
Take a tour of the refuge along the wildlife drive and see buffalo keeping cool in their wallows, or a majestic bull elk watching over his herd. For some scenic exercise, take a hike down to the beautiful Fort Falls and the Niobrara River. Stop at the Visitor's Center to learn about the history of the Fort and the refuge, or pack a lunch and do some bird watching at one of the picnic areas. If you're planning to visit in October, witness the surplus buffalo being auctioned to buyers from across the nation.
